Risk Factors & Prevention
Although anyone can get plantar warts, you are at an increased risk if you:
- Walk barefoot in public or on moist surfaces (e.g. locker rooms, swimming pools)
- Have a weakened immune system
- Have had plantar warts before
- Share objects that touch other feet (e.g. socks, shoes)
To help prevent plantar warts, you can follow these measures:
- Avoid touching warts
- Wash your hands frequently, especially after direct contact with a wart
- Keep your skin free of cuts
- Wear footwear in public places and in showers
- Avoid sharing objects that touched other people’s feet
